I had the opportunity to watch 'King Richard', and how magnificently was it done!
I watched it with my my suns and it made me so emotional... For one I was filled with pride as I watched something onscreen that also unfolded in front of my very eyes growing up watching the success of the Williams Sisters. It was so telling to me how the world made Richard seem "crazy" when all in all he was dedicated, intelligent, and knowledgeable; a man who wanted the best for his family and tried in the ways that HE knew how to achieve that! He was a "prophet" because he spoke into existence and manifested the powerhouse duo before they were born!
I don't give a damn what he may not have been, I could truly see what and who he was through the eyes of these Queens, his daughters who presented to us, KING Richard! Will Smith is one helluva an actor as we already know and he just keeps ascending!!! I enjoyed his onscreen presence and came to understand his Youtube special in another way, as he is also my bday twin!
The power of the man that Venus and Serena knew as their Father/Coach, a man with the traumatic southern childhood my Mississippi-born father and most men from that era likely experienced...and the man who is Will Smith resonated with me deeply. As a "daddy's girl", I have come to learn as a daughter, a wife, a sister, and a mother how unkind the world can be to BLACK men; I have vowed with every breath in me to support, love, protect, and hold space for these men in a way that many of us have not been taught to. Not to cosign any wrongdoing, but most certainly to loudly acknowledge and shine a light on ALL that is good about them!
As I watched it was made clear to me that we use the tools that we have for the jobs we have been called to do, and I was satisfied in a thought that I always had but that was not always supported; that children are not only a blessing but are here to be fashioned by us to be the very best that they can be...THAT is our one true job as parents...the realization that fancy schools and jobs be damned, it's the fancy love, support, and advocating that they really need!
I'm a Mom...a daughter...a Fan of the Black Man. What's your SUPERPower?
